STAYING HOME - a Counter Cultural Concept That Has

or

Ways to Have Fun at Home

Have you ever come home from a vacation exhausted, and looking to the work routine as a way to rest up?  Sometimes people wear themselves out "having fun."  Once Chuck Swindoll said, "we are becoming a people who play at our worship, worship our work, and work at our play."

The homestead model keeps recreation refreshingly simple.  The idea of homesteading envisions the sufficiency of the home place.  In the past, homesteaders literally survived with little more than what they could produce from their land.  So staying home was common practice.  But, today we are tempted to reach in so many directions and to great distances to relieve the stresses produced by fast-paced, urban techno-living.  Modern life can sometimes interfere with the peace of the home and create chaos in people's lives.  By living simply, our attentions are directed to important things; like being able to spend time as a family, knowing the reward of working hard and seeing the results of our efforts.  But, the old homestead would also provide some refreshment.  The old adage is that the family that PRAYS together STAYS together.  But the family that PLAYS together is going in a good direction too. One of the delights of homestead home making is providing a place where people love to be!

We don’t have to meander through a dozen states belching vehicle emissions, using up gas, spending money on motels, fast-foods, and theme parks.  We only need to consider some things that can make home the most fun, favorite place to be.

  • a volleyball net
  • a sand box
  • a rope swing
  • an above ground pool
  • a hammock
  • a shooting range
  • a duck pond
  • a zip line
  • a horse (or cow) to ride
  • a library corner
  • a garden bench from which to journal or draw
  • a tent
  • a play/climbing structure
  • new kittens or chicks
  • a straw bale fort

Instead of running into town to find something fun to do, make art or make music at home.   Being creative together is fun and relationship enhancing.  The family can sing along with a guitar or piano, put several instruments together or learn to harmonize acappella.

Provide brunches, potlucks and movie nights.  You can be social and never leave the house when your homestead is the setting of all of the fun.  Try to keep something planned that everyone is looking forward to.  It could even be Read Aloud Novel Night.

Reinvent your yard. Purchase or build a fire pit and roast chestnuts or marshmellows.  Set up a hammock.  Build a snowman.  Do some gardening and turn your yard into something beautiful.

Dress up your picnic table with a beautiful white tablecloth.  Add candles, fancy cheese, chocolate and voilà: five-star fun at home.

Be aware of events like meteor showers so you can lay a blanket down out side, let everyone lie on their back and watch the heavens declare the glory of God.

STAYING HOME!  It's possible and practical.  It’s just a matter of thinking a little differently.  The economy of time, and money are improved when we can have fun at home.
